Should Family Get In The Way Of Who You Love? Da Brat Officially Comes Out And Shares Why She Waited So Long

After more than 20 plus years in the music business, Da Brat officially comes out and confirms her amazing relationship with entrepreneur Jesseca Dupart.

Although her sister, LisaRaye McCoy introduced Da Brat to her now rumored fiance’, she revealed that not everyone in her family is happy with her decision.

“Yeah, my mom is not, like, jumping for joy, she’s not going to condone it, but she loves me unconditionally. No one in my family has said anything bad or degrading.

Her family is deeply religious and that upbringing influenced her decision to stay silent. She grew up attending church five days out of the week, playing numerous instruments, and directing the choir. Her family forced her to wear long skirts and abide by traditional values. She never wanted to upset her grandmother with the secret she held for so long.

“I would not want anyone in the church to judge [my grandmother] because of what I do. You never want to hurt the people that raised you; you don’t want to disappoint them.”

She was also afraid of how her sexuality would impact her career.

“It was absolutely my decision. I mean, you saw what happened to people like Ellen: Remember when she lost her TV show, and all these horrible things were happening? People were totally against it.”

It was always her choice. Her team never forced her into this decision because, in her mind, it was about the business.

“I was always told you want to be f—able to men and women to sell records — you don’t want anybody to discriminate,” she says.

Despite pressure from her family and the industry, she could not contain her love for rumored fiance Jesseca Dupart. She’s officially out and ready to boldly celebrate Pride month this June.

“To me, Pride is loving myself and not making excuses for anything: Live in your truth,” she says. “If I can inspire someone or help somebody to deal with their issues and their sexuality, then I’m here for it.”

We want to hear from you guys, do you think that sexuality in the Black community continues to cause division amongst us?
