We all need a friend like Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds.
BabyFace commemorated the 25th anniversary of the “Waiting To Exhale” soundtrack, which he wrote and produced, with an Instagram LIVE tribute. While sharing his favorite behind-the-scenes stories, he opened up about a time he helped good friend Aretha Franklin out of a bad relationship.
“Five years ago I performed with Aretha… I sat in her (dressing) room and she told everyone to leave… Then she said, ‘You be (sic) writing all these love songs and I want your advice,’ shared Babyface, “she said, ‘I’m seeing this gentleman and I’m gonna tell you some of the things he’s been doing. And I’m trying to decide if I want to date him or not…'”
After Babyface heard the details, which he mentions he wouldn’t go too deep into, he warned Aretha that he “wouldn’t trust this gentleman,” and he recalls that “about a month later I got a call and she said, ‘You were right, Face. He wasn’t the one.’ ”
In the mid-1990s the two artists became close when Aretha recorded three songs written by Babyface, including “Hurts Like Hell” that appeared on the “Waiting To Exhale” soundtrack.
They remained close until Aretha’s death in 2018.
Babyface’s Instagram Live tribute was originally set for Mother’s Day, however, after the sudden loss of legendary music giant, Andre Harrell, he postponed it to this past Sunday (May 24).
