Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of the tragic death of rapper Nipsey Hussle and to many, it still feels like it happened yesterday.
Born, Ermias Asghedom, Hussle was shot and killed on March 31, 2019 at his clothing store, the Marathon Clothing Company. He left behind partner Lauren London, the 3-year old son that they shared, Kross Ermias, and 11- year old daughter from a previous relationship, Emani.
“It’s been a year since you’ve transitioned. The pain is as heavy today as it was a year ago,” says London in a heartfelt post honoring Hussle on Instagram.
“With every breath I take I honor you,” London went on in her IG caption. “I carry this pain with purpose. I promise I will make you proud. I promise to apply everything you taught me. In life and in death. Ermias Asghedom. There will never be another.”
He was only 33 years old, yet as the world honored him, we were reminded of the impact he had on his community and across the world.
Hussle’s influence went beyond the norm in how he always made it his mission to stand up for his community. Whether it was creating Vector90- a coworking space in South Central with a focus on teaching STEM skills to the people he grew up around or his involvement with, Our Opportunity- an investment fund that seeks to use tax incentives to further develop communities of color, he was forever indebted to the betterment of the culture.
The late rapper was all about life being a marathon and not a race which is why his fans, friends and loved ones remember him with the saying, “the marathon continues” followed by a checkered victory lap flag. That flag symbolizes his last and only album, ‘Victory Lap’, which won the 2020 Grammy for both best rap/sung performance and best rap performance.
One person in particular who’s picking up the pieces to continue Hussle’s legacy is media mogul, Nick Cannon. He released the trailer last night for “Strong Enemies: The Untold Case of Dr. Sebi,” the documentary the rapper was working on during the time of his death.
