Since the tragic passing of celebrated rapper and entrepreneur Ermias “Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom mere weeks ago, many of his fans, family members, and collaborators still struggle daily in coming to terms with his absence. It’s difficult to overstate the impact Nipsey left on the hundreds of thousands if not millions of people he reached and inspired with not only his music, but his lifestyle and progressive, uplifting mentality.
As news of his death was confirmed and spread across the country and the world, Nipsey’s Marathon clothing brand and music saw a massive surge in consumption as admirers moved to mourn his passing and commemorate his legacy. Today, nearly two months later, the release of content featuring the late Los Angeles icon rings bittersweet.
One such freshly public offering is Higher, a track from Dj Khaled’s 11th studio album, Father of Asahd, wherein Nipsey discusses his family, personal maneuvers through South Central LA, and his eventual legacy. The official music video for the song, which was shot just two days before the rapper’s untimely death, stars a relaxed Nip, adorned head to toe in silk and illuminated by the cascading rays of the LA sun.
Though no one could predict it at the time, the Eif Rivera shot video serves as a perfect manifesto and send-off for one of the true visionaries of this generation of hip-hop. Though Neighborhood Nip may no longer be with us in the flesh, his spirit lives on in his art, his teachings, and the loved ones he leaves behind.
R.I.P. Nip, The Marathon most certainly Continues.
