In her new memoir “More Myself,” Alicia Keys reveals an all too familiar story about being taking advantage of early in her career. The songstress revealed the shoot went way too far when left alone with a photographer.
In an early 2000s photoshoot for a magazine cover, Keys explains how the photographer encouraged her to “open up her shirt a little” while he fired off snaps on his camera. Although her spirit screamed “that something is wrong” she complied. Her “protests,” lodged in the back of her throat, just would not “make their way out.”
She also acquiesced to other demands like “pulling down her jeans a little,” wondering if she said “no” would “doors be closed to her.”
Keys recants her emotions as she reflected on the story in the new book, sharing that afterward she went home and cried “harder than ever.”
“This isn’t about me showing some skin, which I’ll do on my own terms, for my own purposes, in the coming years. It’s about feeling manipulated. It’s about being objectified.”
She didn’t share the name of the magazine or the photographer, but there’s suspicion it could be this one.
The singer also wrote about the struggle of continuing her pregnancy with her second child and how she felt overwhelmed with the busyness of the careers of her and hubby Swizz Beatz and how a new baby could impact that.
